As a parent, you may wonder when the right time is to consider orthodontic treatment for your child. The answer isn’t the same for every child because each one develops differently, and the timing of braces or other orthodontic appliances depends on their individual needs. At Children’s Dental Health Center, P.C., we believe in creating personalized treatment plans that support healthy dental development at every stage.
Early orthodontic treatment, often referred to as Phase 1, typically begins between the ages of 7 and 10. During this period, children still have a mix of baby and permanent teeth. The goal of this early phase is to guide the development of the jaw and create an ideal environment for incoming permanent teeth. This may involve using braces, expanders, or retainers to address issues such as crowding, crossbites, or improper spacing. By intervening early, we can often reduce the severity of orthodontic problems and simplify or shorten future treatment.
Even after early treatment, most children will need a second phase (commonly between the ages of 12 and 14) once all permanent teeth have erupted. This phase focuses on fine-tuning the alignment and bite to ensure long-term oral health and function.
In some cases, early intervention may not be necessary. For certain children, it’s more effective to wait until all the permanent teeth are in and proceed with a single comprehensive phase of braces during the early teenage years. This approach avoids the need for two separate treatment phases and may be ideal for mild to moderate alignment issues.
At Children’s Dental Health Center, P.C., we understand that no two smiles are the same. That’s why we take the time to evaluate your child’s unique dental development and recommend the timing and type of treatment that will deliver the best results. Whether it’s early orthodontic care or waiting for a later phase, our focus is always on what’s right for your child.
