Digital X-raysBitewing x-raysBitewing x-rays help us locate any cavities that are forming in between two teeth. These cavities can go undetected without the x-rays and if untreated can eventually lead to problems. It is recommended by the American Dental Association that these x-rays be taken once a year. Panoramic X-raysPanoramic x-rays are a “big picture” x-ray: it takes a picture of all of the teeth, the jaw joint, and the surrounding area of the face. This x-ray is used to identify orthodontic problems and locate all of the teeth and any missing or extra teeth including the wisdom teeth. A panoramic x-ray may also locate sinus problems or abnormalities such as abscesses, tumors or TMJ problems. We recommend that this x-ray be taken once every three years for children under eighteen. Cephlometric X-raysLateral Cephlometric x-rays are used to determine the bone and teeth position from front to back and also growth forecasting. A frontal Cephlometric x-ray is used to determine the bone and teeth position from side to side in the skull. These x-rays are important when choosing an orthodontic adjustment appropriate to the situation. This x-ray is taken a few times through orthodontic treatment to view outcome. Periapical X-raysPeriapical x-rays are mostly used in emergencies. This x-ray shows an individual tooth from the crown (showing part) to the root, and even some of the bone around that tooth. When taking this x-ray we are searching for tooth damage, infection, impacted teeth, or any reason that particular tooth is in pain. The Children's Dental Health Center Digital X-raysAt the Children's Dental Health Center, it is important to us that we maintain a high standard for all of our patients. Digital x-rays offer less radiation, high speed technology, and a more comfortable experience. Radiation exposure is a big concern many people have when consenting to dental x-rays on themselves or on their children. Our machines have quoted very low radiation: 70–90% less than the traditional film x-rays. In fact it is so low that there is more radiation achieved by spending a few hours in the sun. |
